I finshed Soft Invasions last night. I started reading your novel about a week ago and it was within the first 15 pages that I realized you had set your story in a parallel 1942, as if Dos Passos had written Sci-Fi. Or if Nathanael West had walked away from his car crash unscathed and lived long enough to become the New Journalist avatar for Genet, Mailer, and Didion. Having been born in Los Angeles and lived here all but seven of my forty-seven years, I want to say thank you for showing me a Los Angeles that I have not really seen before, one that feels both alien and true, just as Los Angeles does. The dread, the physical & psychological disfigurement are real, yet they are hardly discussed. These are atmospheric qualities you either know intimately or picked up on intuitively. These are delicate items you have given to the reader. I also think you have written the first and also the best American work of fiction of the Trump Era. Other people will figure this out, because you have made art that cannot be easily consumed or digested by the maw of Runaway Capitalism, which is something I should assume you already understand. Anyway, I look forward to your next book. Godspeed.

    Hello Mr Reich,

I am currently in the process of finishing a Masters, the working title being, ‘Interior and Exterior Settings in Heart of Darkness and Mistah Kurtz!’.

I know this may be a long shot but I wondered if you might have time to give me your views on a couple of things?

One of my chapters covers Achebe’s views on Heart of Dakness and to what extent your own novel addresses the issues he has with the original. Also, this chapter is related to the political aspects, such as the way in which Conrad made a point through Marlow and how, in comparison, you made a point through Kurtz.

The main body of my close reading is regarding settings in relation to character development, however, the above areas I am trying to develop at the moment, as your own novel provides a modern perspective on what has proven to be a controversial novella by Conrad.

I understand you may be busy, but if there is any chance at all that you may have five minutes to help shape my view of these issues I would be eternally grateful.

    Thanks,
    Graeme Buchanan

Dear Graeme – I am so sorry that this comment through my website didn’t reach me until now! If there is still a chance that I can help – you may have finished your thesis by now – I would love to.
      All best,
      James
